 Antonio O'Breskey's Last night a large audience attended the ethnic concert by Antoni O’Breskey and his friends at the National Concert Hall. But the magnificent auditorium wasn’t full to capacity. Pity! Perhaps there are still Dubliners out there that need to realise what they are missing. There would be many countries in the world that would love to have Antoni O’Breskey (or Antoni O’ as he loves to call himself) as their musical ambassador, for he is one of the most exciting pianist virtuosos in modern times, who has delved into the traditions of many countries’ musical repertoires and moods and created and interpreted wonderful fusion. Last night he was accompanied by other polished musicians from Italy, Northern Ireland and Africa such as Enio Marfoli (oboe), Gabine Debire (voice), Vanni Breschi (drums), Lorenzo Forti (base guitar) Consuelo Nerea (bodhran) and Joe Mc Hugh (William pipe, low whistle and tin whistle), with charismatic Ronnie Drew as his guest of honour. The tunes and songs interpreted by this group were varied, spanning from Irish, Italian to Spanish and African influences; not to mention the magnificent rendition of some Irish tunes dressed up with multicultural fusions. If you closed your eyes you were transported into the touching world of Irish musical nostalgia, whereas at time you thought you were hearing something reminiscent of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western sound tracks, especially when powered by Joe McHugh’s tin whistle. At the end of the concert I wondered when Antoni O’ would have another concert, for I will not miss it! I love to see this musician extraor
